Independence Day

Independence Day is celebrated every year on August 14th, as a National Holiday in Pakistan. 14 August 1947 celebrates the independence of the country from the United Kingdom. The UK Parliament passed the Indo-Pak Independence Act 1947 in the Indian Constituent Assembly legislative sovereignty. India still retained King George VI as head of state until it was incorporated into the full republican constitution has not changed. However, Pakistan elected Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, as 1st Governor-General of Pakistan.

Pakistan gained independence in the aftermath of the Two-Nation Theory Movement. Which is noted for large scale non-violent resistance and civil disobedience by the Muslim League (ML) and Congress. Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which British India was divided into the religions of Pakistan and India; Partition violent riots and mass casualties and religious violence. The cause coincided with the displacement of about 15 million people.

On 14th August 1947, Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan hoisted the Pakistan National Flag. On each subsequent Independence Day, the incumbent Prime Minister gave an address to the nation by raising the flag. The entire program is broadcast by Pakistan Television Network, Radio Pakistan, and different private TV channels and usually begins with the National Anthem.

Independence Day is celebrated across Pakistan (including Occupied Kashmir) with flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural events. It is a national holiday.

At the Lahore Session of 1940 of the Muslim League, the historic convention of All India Muslim League convened to resolve; demanding autonomy of the Muslim majority States within the Indian Union the Lahore Declaration, or “Declaration of Independence of Pakistan” was announced, and August 14 was declared as Independence Day. The Muslim League called upon the people to pledge civil disobedience and “Congress directives are issued from time to time” until India divided into two nations “Pakistan and India”; attained complete independence. Such freedom, the day was celebrated to increase nationalistic enthusiasm among Pakistan citizens and to force the British government to consider granting independence.

The Ceremony was marked by meetings where attendees took the “pledge of freedom”. doing some creative work, spinning, or serving the ‘untouchables’, or reunion of Hindus and Muslims, or prohibition work, or even that after the actual independence in 1947, the Constitution of Pakistan came into force, since then 23rd March came to be celebrated as Pakistan Day. 23 March is a significant date in the history of Pakistan.
